Tether Reserve Buffer Jumps $3.8B in One Quarter

Tether’s surpluses surged from $4.1 billion at the end of June to $7.95 billion.

The increase added roughly $3.8 billion to the company’s reserve surplus in a single quarter. Total assets increased to $191.45 billion with total liabilities reaching $183.50 billion, with a majority of the liabilities held by digital tokens issued being about $183.47 billion.

USDT issuance demonstrated overall strength at approximately $184 billion despite fluctuations in market sentiment for cryptocurrencies during the first nine months of 2026.

Treasury Holdings Drive Tether’s Earnings

Tether said U.S. Treasury bills and reverse re-purchase agreements continued to be the primary sources of operating income. As of September 30 government debt represented the primary asset of the reserve portfolio exceeding $132.4 billion via direct and indirect holdings of Treasury bills.

That asset allocation will give them significant short-term liquidity, in short-term, liquid bonds, that can support redeeming when the market is in a state of stress.

Nine-Month Operating Profit Reaches $4.5B

Tether generated $4.5 billion in net operating profit during the first three quarters of 2026.

Q3’s operating profit was reported at $1.5 billion, on par with in Q2. Tether said it had $4.11 billion in reserve for the second quarter, and that number grew dramatically for Q3.

The higher surplus provides Tether with more liquidity to redeem tokens and cover the cost of maintaining infrastructure during tough market conditions, CEO Paolo Ardoino wrote.

The statistics were revealed after Tether underwent its first full independent financial statement audit in August. KPMG U.S. gave an unqualified opinion for the company’s 2025 financial statements.

USDT Still Controls More Than 60% of Stablecoins

Despite the USDT circulating market capitalization dropping below the $184 billion USDT issuance figure reported in the quarter-end statement, USDT remains the largest dollar-backed token.

DefiLlama revealed that USDT netted a market capitalization of approximately USD 180 billion on 30 October, with the overall market of stablecoins valued at nearly USD 297 billion. This means the USDT is around 60.6% dominant.

The gap indicates the difference between Tether’s September 30 reporting date and the current market data at a point in time circulating.

As excess reserves near $8 billion and the portfolio is heavily weighted with Bitcoin securities, Tether will go into 2026’s 4th quarter with a considerably healthier financial cushion to support the crypto market’s most prominent stable coin.
